United States: People who are asking how worried we should be about certain chemicals which called endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), like phthalates and BPA. These chemicals can be found in some everyday products.

As reported by wlky.com, Dr. Michael Bloom, a professor at George Mason University, says that scientists are still learning about EDCs.

Some studies suggest that being exposed to these chemicals might be linked to health problems, such as issues with brain development, fertility, and puberty. It’s important to keep learning more about how these chemicals can affect our health

Although there are still a number of directions in which researchers would like to examine the effects of EDCs, there are also such groups as the Environmental Working Group – a non-commercial organization investigating and promoting mechanisms for safe products – that call people reduce their exposure.

Endocrine disruptors act as hormones and hormones are chemicals that deliver messages throughout the body to co-ordinate various functions in organs, skin, muscles and other tissues as defined by the Cleveland Clinic

The Following section presents what experts have to say about EDCs and what you should know about EDCs.

What are EDCs?

These are compounds that are not made by the human body but instead affect how your hormones work, according to Bloom. Hormones play a variety of roles in the body as are evident in puberty, reproductive ability and even brain formation.

Certain of those chemicals can interact in your body like the hormones which your body synthesizes including estrogen and testosterone. Other EDCs interfere with the synthesis of hormones in such a way that the body produces more of a hormone, produces less of it or alters metabolism of the hormone, he said.

Phthalates, for instance include synthetic chemicals many manufacturers incorporate in over 300 goods including food and beverages utensils and plastic sheets. These EDCs affect synthesis of testosterone, according to The Endocrine Society.

Effects of endocrine disruptors on Health

New research points to the possibility that endocrine disruptors might be involved in such diseases as attention deficit disorder and impulse control disorders, Bloom stated.

“These hormones are crucial in advancement of the mind as well as ordinary clubs, so moving toward these EDCs at some point will switch up your development,” Friedman said.

As a matter of fact, the issue of deepening investigation research is that it is difficult to investigate EDCs and their negative effects on human body even deeper, he said.
